At the end of the night on Samuel’s second date with Catherine, he had something special to ask her. It would mean they’d be seen as an official couple, if she accepted. “Catherine, would you come to Benjamin’s eighteenth birthday with me?”

“I’d love to. When is it?”

“On February fourteen. St Valentines Day.”

Catherine giggled. “Is it at your parents’ house?”

“Jah. It’ll only be the family and they’d know how I feel about you.” He gulped hoping he hadn’t overstepped the mark.

Catherine couldn’t help smiling.

“Don’t be bringing a present or anything.”

“What about something small?”

“Nee, he’d be embarrassed. We don’t give gifts in our family. Not for birthdays. We give small gifts at Christmas.”

“Okay. I’m looking forward to it.”

He stared into her eyes. “Me too.” He never imagined that he’d get along so well with a young woman. It was all much easier than he thought it would be.
